Edward H Schwallie, age 84, of Manasquan, New Jersey, died on Father’s Day, June 18th 2017. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, son of Ann and Hugo Schwallie, and brother of Don, Ed was known for his sense of humor, positive outlook, corny poetry, generosity, financial astuteness, strategic thinking and loving heart.

He was a student athlete at Cathedral Latin High School and later attended John Carroll University where he graduated with an Accounting Degree and a ROTC Commission. But perhaps the most notable thing about his high school and college years was that during them he met and married his lifelong companion and love, Marge. They just celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 5th.

Ed was a born leader, but he also worked to hone those skills as an officer during a stint in Korea and also by attaining his MBA from Case Western Reserve University. He followed that with a distinguished business career first at General Electric and later during the zenith of Booz Allen’s success when he served as a Senior Vice President and CFO. Although his career started in Ohio, it took his family to Lake Forest, IL and finally to Summit, NJ before he and Marge retired to the Jersey Shore. He and Marge enjoyed traveling the world but especially loved visiting Ireland and Florida.

Although a career of this distinction might be the greatest life achievement for many, Ed was most proud of his family. He was truly loved and will be dearly missed by Marge and all their wonderful children: Ed, Jeanie, Cathy, Michael, Tom and Chris. He was always there for them when they needed his support and wisdom.

Ed learned to love sports playing football and baseball as a child, which led to him becoming center and team captain of his Cathedral Latin High School football team. He spoke fondly of the Indian's 1948 World Series win and the Browns success from 1945 to 1965. Still over the years he stayed loyal to his birth town teams, so he was ecstatic to see his Cleveland Cavaliers finally bring home a World Championship last year after the long, painful wait. He also loved to play golf. He and his wife Marge both had the honor of getting holes-in-one; his was during a tournament at a local country club. Luckily he did have hole-in-one insurance.

Ed was known as a person of exceptional generosity. Throughout his life Ed committed time, treasure, expertise and passion to the autism community, especially Eden in Princeton, NJ and the Organization for Autism Research (OAR). Through OAR he created a strong charitable foundation that provided scholarships through OAR for individuals on the autism spectrum. He also co-founded of Our House in Summit, NJ; which helped provide supportive homes for people with disabilities. He also generously supported John Carroll University and the Catholic Church. Along with raising his 6 children Ed’s support for these causes will be his long-lasting legacy.

Ed always liked to say, “no coulda, shoulda, woulda’s” meaning live your life in such a way that you have no regrets. His wonderful, shining, life-long example of how to do just that is his lasting gift to us all.

Ed is survived by his beloved wife Marge, his loving children: Edward Jr. (Maureen Schwallie) of Corvallis OR, Jean (Michael O’Connor) of Louisville CO, Cathy Schwallie Farmer (former spouse Doug Farmer) of Piedmont/Berkeley CA , Michael of Hamilton NJ, Tom of Bridgewater NJ and Chris (Michele Schwallie) of Holland Township NJ. Eleven grandchildren: Ted, Lucy (Matt), Clare (Frank), Laura, Danny, Neal, Haley (David), Matthew, Molly, Kayla and Hannah. Three great-grandchildren: Charlie, Winston and Nora. He is also survived by in-laws (also known as “outlaws”): Mary Anne and Russ, Al and Cathy, Emily Schwallie, special cousins Kay and Bill Varga, and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Monday, June 26 from 4pm to 8pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan.
