Obituary for Carol Ann O'Connor

Carol Ann O’Connor of Allenwood passed away on October 14, 2017. Carol was born on October 23, 1940. She was raised in Teaneck, NJ and subsequently lived in Bergenfield and Saddle Brook, NJ, prior to suffering a debilitating stroke in 2010, when she became a resident at The Geraldine Thompson Nursing Home, Allenwood, NJ. Although coping with a lifelong developmental disability, Carol held a full time job as a packer with Sportcraft, Inc. for over 26 years. When the company moved, she got a part-time job in the circulation department of the Record. After her mother passed away in 1986, Carol decided she wanted to try and live on her own; with then love and encouragement from family and friends, and the tremendous support provided by the Transitional Apartment Program sponsored by the ARC of Bergen/Passaic Counties, Carol flourished and enjoyed many years of independent living and traveling with “The Group” to Ochos Rios, Disneyworld and Lake Tahoe just to mention a few. In the years 2000, Carol’s accomplishments were recognized when she received The Paula Bottum Award for Excellence from the NJ Sports and Exposition Authority. She was chosen for this award because of her demonstrated strength and success through perseverance and determination.

Carol is survived by her loving sister, Janet O’Conner Robinson; her cousins Arthur Hoffmann and his wife Barbara; her cousins Stephen Hoffmann and his wife Artis; cousins Joan Crystal and Pat Ryan and her dearest friend Margaret Thieme, Shannon Aviles and Patrick Ferraro.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday October 19, 2017 from 10 am to 11 am at The First Reformed Church of Hasbrouck Heights with a service to begin at 11 am. Interment to follow at Hackensack Cemetery, Hackensack, NJ. Then on Saturday October 21, 2107 the will be a memorial visitation from 1pm to 4pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan.
