Johanna (Joan) M. Hunter, 81, of Lakewood, NJ, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018, peacefully surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born September 12, 1936, to James and Elizabeth (Shelley) Strappe, in Brooklyn, NY, the first of two daughters. She was a proud Brooklynite and loyal Mets fan.
She met her husband, Gerard (Gerry) Hunter while working in New York City. They moved to Manalapan, NJ, in 1965, where they raised their five daughters. During their time in Manalapan, both Joan and Gerry were active members in the community, particularly the Yorktowne Social Club and St. Thomas More Church. Joan was a member of the Red Hats Society and an active Mahjong and Bingo player.
Joan is predeceased by her husband Gerard who recently passed on January 20, 2018 and her parents James and Elizabeth Strappe. She is survived by her sister Margaret (Peggy) Meininger of Westbury, NY and her sister in law Barbara Hunter of Whiting; along with five daughters and their families; Mary DeFreitas (James) of Campbell Hall, NY; Noreen Sharkey (William) of Manalapan; Jeanne Petillo (Gavin) of Manasquan; Patricia Niro (Robert) of Manalapan; Nancy Hunter of Manalapan; and, 11 grandchildren Heather, Allison, Brenden, Justin, Kelly, Katelyn, Eric, Anthony, Emily, Carly and Jack.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, May 24, 2018 from 4-8 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals 2643 Old Bridge Road Manasquan, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am on Friday, May, 25, at St. Mary of the Lake 43 Madison Avenue Lakewood, NJ 08701. Interment to follow at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent, NJ 07763.
